I do not have any rigorously-assembled and current statistics about what percentage of people read or how much and how often they do. I know I've read, sometime in the past, that the median American reads one book a year, which means that a huge portion read none. And of course this is their right.
I always thought it was kind of a pre-req to being one of these culture posers that you'd never even touched a book; maybe you'd just bought a lot of books and you had them stored in your house/apartment somewhere very conspicuous on a shelf, but anyone who looks closely will see the spines have never been bent. All of the most pretentious pseudo-intellectual types I know don't read and are proud of it, or those that do read will read some popular fiction book, and somehow they think that is learning instead of entertainment. Nothing wrong with reading fiction, but it doesn't make you an intellectual lol
