In lieu of losing my temper - there is a difference between expecting good art to effectively consider moral questions and demanding a particular moral conclusion. And with that I leave you.

Regarding the Sopranos: I think that tension is the heart of the show. You HAVE to root for him for the horror of who he actually is to hit home. That discomfort of reconciling the indulgence and enjoyment of seeing our own violent, animal instincts with the stark reality what that shrink is telling Carmela and us is the point. Without (scenes like) the second scene, and more, the strange magnetic draw we have to it, that incredible first scene doesn’t have its impact. If we see Tony only as a criminal, completely unlike us - a Hannibal Lector to gape at in distanced fascination - then the psychiatrist’s visit becomes utterly mundane. But because we the audience have daughters, or people we love, we get a sick buildup of excitement knowing we are about to see Tony make someone pay for humiliating his own daughter. Because we love people who hurt us, because we are complicit in what we condemn, from our own relationships to the fact of living in this exploitative country, and most of all because we ourselves have a side of us base enough to enjoy and take pleasure in it, the show’s regurgitating that back at us and making us stare at the vomit that results is the whole purpose. If you say you don’t root for Tony sometimes you’re missing most of the payoff of the show.
