I wish these trends would stop affecting genre fiction.

I just want to read a normal sci-fi fantasy book again.

As a child of the 80s and 90s who grew up on Gore Vidal, Tom Wolfe and Hunter S. Thompson, I'd call this era of essay writing (roughly 2012-present) the Apology Tour. Everyone is so damn apologetic and self-effacing, trying to preemptively defuse criticism, whether it's a personal/confessional essay or an analytical one, or both. Apologies are pro-social, I guess; didn't all our kindergarten teachers tell us that? But while apologizing may make one the bigger man, it doesn't make the better writer. I can't remember when I last read an essay in a major publication that gave the "wow" reaction I used to get all the time.
