I've often been annoyed by the to-do over functioning labels and find that most if not all of the negative things said about them are BS. But then, as I've mentioned before here, I'm an autistic on one end of the spectrum while my brother is toward the other end, and functioning labels are a simple shorthand to convey that. I'm pretty much convinced that the maligning of those labels evolved from downplaying people like my brother.

Worse, functioning labels just crop up anyways under another guise. We have levels 1-3 in DSM 5, and the labels "low support needs" and "high support needs" practically serve as the substitutes for the much maligned functioning labels. It's just another pointless turn of the euphemism treadmill.

Reminds me of the "recovered memory" techniques of the last century. Psychological therapy seems especially vulnerable to therapists projecting their own beliefs and fantasies upon their clients.
